DESCRIPTION
An attractive English ironstone dish decorated with a detailed polychrome scene of two birds among cattails, reeds and flowering aquatic plants. The birds are rendered in warm brown, black and yellow tones against a cream ground, complemented by green foliage and pink flowers. A narrow red line frames the central decoration while a turquoise blue band provides a striking finish to the outer rim. The extensive fine crazing and warm coloration of the glaze contribute to the period character of the piece. A decorative example of English bird-themed tableware with strong naturalistic appeal.
COLLECTOR’S NOTE
Natural history subjects, including birds, flowers and wetland vegetation, were popular decorative themes on English ceramics during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The combination of detailed bird decoration, colorful enamels and ironstone body makes this an appealing display piece for collectors of English ceramics and ornithological designs.
