DESCRIPTION
An impressive Chinese Longquan celadon charger dating to the Ming Dynasty, 16th to 17th century. The large circular dish features a central medallion carved with a flowering peony branch, surrounded by flowing lotus scrolls and stylised foliage extending across the broad cavetto. The gently fluted rim is decorated with additional scrolling motifs, while the exterior displays complementary carved ornamentation. The entire piece is covered in a soft olive-green celadon glaze, with subtle variations in tone highlighting the carved details. The underside features a substantial circular footring with exposed reddish-brown firing surfaces, characteristic of traditional Longquan stoneware production. A substantial and decorative example of Chinese Ming Dynasty celadon ceramics.
COLLECTOR’S NOTE
Longquan celadon was among the most celebrated ceramic traditions of China, renowned for its distinctive green glazes and finely carved decoration. During the Ming Dynasty, large chargers with floral medallions, lotus scrolls and moulded borders were produced for both domestic use and overseas trade. Peony and lotus motifs carried traditional associations with prosperity, purity and good fortune. This charger represents an appealing example of late Ming Longquan-style ceramic craftsmanship and would make an interesting addition to a collection of early Chinese pottery and porcelain.
