Period Context or Era Overview
The Meiji era followed the opening of Japan to international trade. Industrial growth and Western influence transformed Japanese decorative arts, which were exported worldwide at exhibitions and world fairs.

  • Porcelain: Satsuma became the most famous export, with dense gilt, figural, and floral decoration. Imari and Kutani continued in elaborate styles.
  • Metalwork: Bronze vessels, often with dragon and phoenix motifs, exported in large numbers.
  • Lacquer & cloisonné: Finely decorated boxes, trays, and vases.
  • Carving: Ivory and wood okimono (figures, animals) for export.
