DESCRIPTION

A decorative 20th century Austrian Vienna style porcelain bowl with a pair of elaborate raised gilt handles. The interior is centered by a finely rendered classical figural scene depicting Cupid and elegantly dressed figures, surrounded by a vivid green border with gilt scrollwork. Further bands of deep blue, ruby red and cream are richly embellished with gilded floral and foliate ornament, while painted floral reserves provide additional detail around the upper border. The exterior is more restrained in ivory tones with delicate gilt decoration beneath a richly patterned blue rim. The elaborate handles and extensive gilding give the bowl a particularly opulent Vienna style appearance.

COLLECTOR’S NOTE

Vienna style porcelain enjoyed continued popularity into the 20th century, with Austrian decorators and manufacturers drawing inspiration from the elaborate figural painting and gilded ornament associated with earlier Viennese porcelain. Classical and mythological subjects combined with jewel like colors and rich gilding remain characteristic features of these decorative wares.
