DESCRIPTION

A modern Chinese stoneware bowl inspired by the celebrated black glazed Jian wares of the Southern Song period. The deep rounded form rises from a small circular foot and is covered inside and out with a lustrous dark glaze densely patterned with silver grey oil spot effects. The crystalline spotting varies naturally in size and concentration, producing an attractive textured appearance against the deep black ground. The restrained shape and dramatic glaze recall historic Tenmoku tea bowls while clearly representing a modern 21st century interpretation. A decorative and tactile example suitable for a collection of contemporary Chinese ceramics or Song inspired studio pottery.
