DESCRIPTION
A Japanese porcelain sweetmeat dish of distinctive rectangular form with flared sides and shaped corners. Decorated in underglaze blue, the interior features small figures traditionally described as immortals within a landscape, surrounded by floral panels and patterned borders. The exterior carries freely painted auspicious motifs between blue line borders. The warm brown dressing along the upper rim provides a pleasing contrast to the blue and white palette. An attractive 19th century Japanese dish with considerable hand-painted character.
COLLECTOR’S NOTE
Small compartment and sweetmeat dishes formed part of the varied tableware produced in Japan during the late Edo and Meiji periods. Figural scenes, floral ornament, and auspicious symbols were popular decorative themes, making examples of this unusual shape appealing additions to collections of Japanese blue and white porcelain.
