DESCRIPTION
A Japanese Imari porcelain plate dating to the Edo period, decorated in underglaze blue, iron red and gilt. The central medallion features a flowering arrangement in a stylized basket or vase, surrounded by scrolling borders. The broad rim is arranged with alternating fan-shaped and rounded cartouches containing flowers, foliage and small figural details. Rich areas of iron red contrast with deep cobalt blue and surviving gilt embellishment. The reverse is simply decorated with flowering branches in blue and iron red, providing an attractive continuation of the traditional Imari palette.
COLLECTOR’S NOTE
Imari porcelain is recognized for its characteristic combination of underglaze cobalt blue with iron-red enamel and gilding. Elaborate floral compositions and compartmented borders became enduring features of Japanese export porcelain and remained popular through the later Edo period.
