CONDITION

GOOD (4/5) – Light wear to gilding and enamel decoration, minor firing imperfections and age-related surface wear. Minor frits on the rim edges filled with white putty. Please review the photos carefully for more details.

DESCRIPTION

Japanese porcelain oval dish decorated in the Kutani style with a dramatic iron red dragon at the center.

The wide border is richly ornamented with gilt scrollwork, floral designs, and roundels depicting immortal figures.

Fine detailing in iron red, gold, green, and turquoise enamel creates a vibrant and decorative appearance.

The reverse is plain glazed with an unmarked foot rim typical of many Meiji period export wares.

An attractive example of late 19th century Japanese decorative porcelain.

COLLECTOR’S NOTE

Kutani-style wares from the Meiji period were widely admired for their bold enamel palette and elaborate decorative schemes.

Dragon motifs symbolized strength, protection, and imperial authority, making them enduring subjects in Japanese ceramic art.
