DESCRIPTION
A Japanese porcelain Imari charger dating to the Edo period, 19th century. The scalloped dish is decorated in underglaze cobalt blue, iron red and gilt with a central flower basket surrounded by abundant flowering branches. The broad border is arranged with alternating floral reserves, deep cobalt grounds and densely decorated panels of blossoms and foliage. The reverse carries freely painted underglaze blue motifs around the foot, while the lobed rim enhances the strong decorative character of the piece.
COLLECTOR’S NOTE
Large Imari chargers were particularly suited to elaborate panelled decoration, combining strong cobalt blue grounds with iron-red enamels and gilt highlights. Floral baskets and abundant flowering branches are characteristic subjects within Japanese decorative porcelain and give this example a richly layered appearance.
