DESCRIPTION

A Japanese Arita porcelain plate decorated in a lively Imari palette with underglaze cobalt blue, iron red, turquoise, pale enamels and gilt highlights. The central medallion contains a stylized floral arrangement surrounded by alternating decorative panels filled with flowering foliage, butterflies and rabbits. Deep cobalt blue sections provide a strong contrast to the colorful enamel decoration, while the gently shaped rim adds further visual interest. The reverse is largely undecorated and the plate is unmarked.

COLLECTOR’S NOTE

Meiji era Arita porcelain continued the long Japanese tradition of richly decorated Imari wares while incorporating increasingly varied enamel palettes and densely arranged motifs. The combination of flowers, butterflies and rabbits gives this example a particularly lively decorative character.
