DESCRIPTION
A German porcelain cup and saucer set decorated in a restrained white and gilt palette. The cup has a rounded body with a simple loop handle and traces of gilt decoration around the rim and handle. The deep saucer is finished with a repeating gilt border motif around its inner rim, giving the set an elegant period appearance. Both pieces bear underglaze blue crossed swords style marks to their bases. The understated form and delicate gilding reflect the refined taste associated with German porcelain of the Rococo tradition.
COLLECTOR’S NOTE
Crossed swords marks are historically associated with the Meissen porcelain manufactory, although variations and imitations were used by other makers. Attribution and dating should therefore be considered cautiously unless the marks and porcelain are independently authenticated.
