DESCRIPTION
An attractive Georgian Wedgwood creamware plate dating to circa 1810, decorated in the richly coloured Chinoiserie Chrysanthemum pattern associated with the Regency period. The interior features a distinctive central blue and white quatrefoil ornament surrounded by large stylised cobalt blue foliage, iron red chrysanthemums and bright green leaves. The decoration is arranged symmetrically against a finely detailed yellow ochre ground with an intricate repeating circular pattern, often described as an oeil de perdrix or partridge-eye design. Delicate gilt highlights enrich the blue foliage, while the outer border displays dark brown scrolling ornaments with cream-coloured floral details and an ochre rim. The reverse bears the impressed WEDGWOOD factory mark, confirming its Staffordshire manufacture.
COLLECTOR’S NOTE
Josiah Wedgwood established one of England’s most influential ceramic manufactories, celebrated for its innovative creamware and refined decorative designs. During the late Georgian and Regency periods, Wedgwood produced a variety of Chinoiserie patterns inspired by Chinese export porcelain, combining Oriental floral motifs with fashionable English colour schemes. The Chrysanthemum pattern is particularly admired for its bold cobalt blue foliage, vibrant enamel colours and distinctive patterned ground. This marked example represents an appealing piece of early 19th-century Wedgwood production and offers collecting interest despite its age-related condition.
