DESCRIPTION

A substantial Victorian Doulton Lambeth stoneware jug with a warm buff body beneath a rich dark brown glazed neck and shoulder. The body is decorated with contrasting applied relief scenes including country figures, a windmill, trees, hunting dogs, a mounted rider and other rural motifs. A tall loop handle with molded terminal completes the robust form. The underside bears an impressed Doulton Lambeth factory mark together with the number 2892, identifying this as a genuine period production.

COLLECTOR’S NOTE

Doulton Lambeth stoneware became highly regarded during the Victorian period for its durable construction, distinctive glazing and inventive applied decoration. Hunting, sporting and rural subjects were particularly popular and remain strongly associated with collectible 19th century Doulton wares.
