DESCRIPTION

Chinese export porcelain sauce boat dating to the Qianlong period of the 18th century. The elegant European-inspired form has a shaped rim, elongated pouring lip, loop handle and raised oval foot. Painted in underglaze blue, the exterior features traditional Chinese waterside landscapes with pagodas, trees, rockwork, buildings and small boats, framed by linear borders. The interior is decorated with a blue floral spray, while a geometric band ornaments the foot and a brown dressed edge follows the shaped upper rim. A decorative example of 18th-century Chinese export porcelain combining European tableware form with traditional Chinese landscape painting.

COLLECTOR’S NOTE

Chinese export sauce boats were produced during the Qianlong period to satisfy European demand for porcelain dining and serving wares. Their Western-inspired forms were frequently combined with Chinese pagoda landscapes and ornamental borders, illustrating the close relationship between Chinese porcelain production and European taste during the 18th century.
