DESCRIPTION

An attractive early 19th century English porcelain serving bowl by Machin, decorated in Pattern 547. The unusual square form has deeply shaped sides and prominent upturned corners enriched with moulded floral, foliate and scroll decoration. The centre features a colourful floral bouquet painted in strong cobalt blue, pink, green and orange enamels against a white ground. The combination of elaborate relief moulding and vibrant botanical decoration gives the piece a distinctive Regency character. The underside carries the painted pattern number 547 associated with this Machin pattern.

COLLECTOR’S NOTE

Machin produced distinctive English porcelain and earthenware during the early 19th century and is particularly interesting to collectors of Regency ceramics. Many Machin pieces were not factory marked, making characteristic shapes, decoration and recorded pattern numbers important in attribution. Pattern 547 provides a useful identifying feature for this decorative example.
