Chinese Porcelain Bowl Iron Red Gilt Grisaille Qing Qianlong Peony Brown Rim 18C

DESCRIPTION

Chinese porcelain bowl dating to the Qianlong period of the 18th century, raised on a circular foot and finished with a brown dressed rim. The exterior is richly decorated in iron red and gilt with flowering peonies, scrolling foliage, a bird and garden elements, complemented by prominent grisaille rockwork. The interior has an iron red ornamental border beneath the rim and a small floral spray to the center. Numerous old metal staple repairs remain clearly visible across the body, providing evidence of the historical repair and continued use of the bowl. An attractive decorative survivor with strong period character despite its extensive condition issues.

COLLECTOR’S NOTE

Metal stapling was a traditional method of repairing valued ceramic vessels before modern restoration techniques became widespread. Such repairs are now of interest as part of an object’s history, illustrating the effort once made to preserve useful and decorative Chinese export porcelain.
