DESCRIPTION
A colorful 19th century Chinese Qing Dynasty watercolor painted on delicate pith paper, depicting an elegantly dressed court lady beside a bright red pedestal table. She wears layered robes in vivid blue, green, pink and gold tones and holds a circular floral fan. A tall blue vase containing flowering stems stands prominently on the table, creating a striking contrast with the red furniture. The detailed costume, jewelry and coiffure are characteristic of Chinese figural pith paintings produced during the Qing period. Presented behind glass with a blue inner border and an ornate gilt frame decorated with raised floral ornament.
COLLECTOR’S NOTE
Chinese pith paintings were particularly popular during the 19th century and are collected for their finely rendered figures, brilliant colors and detailed records of Qing period costume and domestic life. Figural compositions featuring elegantly dressed women, furniture and decorative objects are especially representative of this distinctive export painting tradition.
