DESCRIPTION

A decorative 19th century Chinese Qing Dynasty porcelain vase of compact baluster form with a flared rim and applied beast form handles. The vase is richly painted in the Canton famille rose palette with Mandarin figures arranged within shaped panels, surrounded by flowers, foliage and scrolling borders. Bright pink, green, blue and orange enamels are complemented by gilt highlights to the handles and decorative details. The neck carries an additional figural scene, while the reverse and side panels feature abundant floral ornament. The dense hand painted decoration and small scale give the vase considerable display character.

COLLECTOR’S NOTE

Canton famille rose porcelain became an important Chinese export ware during the Qing Dynasty and is particularly recognized for its densely arranged figural, floral and gilt decoration. Small vases with Mandarin figure panels and applied gilt handles are attractive examples of the richly ornamented style associated with 19th century Canton porcelain.
