DESCRIPTION

Chinese blue and white miniature porcelain vase dating to the Qing dynasty, Guangxu period. The cylindrical body rises to rounded shoulders and a short flared neck, with small applied beast mask handles to either side. Painted in underglaze cobalt blue with stylized lotus blossoms surrounded by dense scrolling foliage, the decoration is completed by a formal border around the lower body. The compact proportions, applied handles and bold floral decoration give the vase an appealing late Qing character.

COLLECTOR’S NOTE

Lotus decoration has a long tradition in Chinese art and is closely associated with purity and harmony, while scrolling floral designs became an enduring feature of Chinese porcelain. Applied beast mask handles draw upon much earlier Chinese vessel traditions and continued to be used as decorative elements during the Qing dynasty. Miniature vases such as this were produced as decorative and collectible objects and retain considerable appeal for collectors of late Qing blue and white porcelain.
