DESCRIPTION
A substantial 19th century Chinese Qing Dynasty porcelain teapot decorated in the colorful Canton famille rose palette. The cylindrical body is densely painted with flowering peonies and other blossoms among green foliage, accompanied by a long-tailed bird, butterflies, fruit and smaller botanical motifs. Further floral sprays decorate the sloping shoulder, while gilt accents enrich the rims and fittings. The teapot retains its decorated porcelain cover and long curved spout, with paired attachment lugs originally intended for an overhead handle. The lively naturalistic decoration gives the piece the richly ornamental character associated with Canton export porcelain.
COLLECTOR’S NOTE
Bird, butterfly and flower decoration was a popular theme on 19th century Chinese famille rose porcelain, combining auspicious natural motifs with the bright enamel palette favored by the export market. Large covered teapots of this form are particularly decorative examples of Qing Dynasty Canton porcelain.
