DESCRIPTION

A Chinese blue and white porcelain saucer dating to the Kangxi period of the Qing Dynasty. The central medallion is painted in underglaze blue with a flowering branch accompanied by small butterflies, surrounded by a richly decorated border of alternating floral motifs. The molded lotus petal relief extends around the cavetto and creates an attractive lobed rim, while a dense geometric band completes the design. Additional freely painted floral sprays decorate the exterior. The combination of molded form and detailed cobalt decoration gives the saucer a distinctive Kangxi period character.

COLLECTOR’S NOTE

Butterflies and flowers are traditional auspicious motifs in Chinese decorative art, associated with happiness, beauty and longevity. Lotus petal molding and lobed forms were particularly effective decorative features on Kangxi porcelain, combining relief work with painted underglaze blue ornament. Such small saucers are appealing examples of the technical and decorative variety achieved by Qing Dynasty porcelain workshops.
