DESCRIPTION

Chinese Canton porcelain plate finely decorated in famille rose enamels with figures representing Daoist immortals arranged amongst scholarly treasures and auspicious objects. The composition includes books, fans, weapons, musical instruments, flowering peonies, and symbolic emblems painted in vivid pink, turquoise, green, and gilt tones. At the center is a circular medallion featuring small animals beneath flowering branches within a gilt border. The painting is detailed and spacious with elegant use of white ground enhancing the decorative arrangement. A vibrant Qing period export plate with strong ornamental appeal.

COLLECTOR’S NOTE

Daoist immortal subjects and precious object compositions were highly popular on Canton export porcelains during the Daoguang period. Such designs reflected themes of longevity, wisdom, rank, and prosperity intended for both domestic appreciation and export markets. Plates combining figures with symbolic scholarly objects are especially valued for their rich iconography and colorful enamel work.
