DESCRIPTION

An attractive Chinese blue and white porcelain deep plate of octagonal form, attributed to the Kangxi period of the Qing Dynasty, early 18th century. The interior is finely decorated in underglaze cobalt blue with a traditional landscape composition featuring a pine tree, cranes, flowering plants, ornamental rockwork and a small architectural structure. A flying crane appears above the scene, while another stands among the flowers and rocks beneath the spreading pine branches. The central decoration is enclosed by a detailed geometric diaper-pattern band, with the broad shaped rim featuring alternating floral sprays, scrolling foliage and further diaper ornament. The plate has a gently rounded deep body, a brown-dressed rim and an unmarked recessed base with an unglazed foot ring. The lively brushwork and carefully arranged composition give the piece considerable decorative appeal.

COLLECTOR’S NOTE

Pine trees and cranes are traditional Chinese symbols of longevity, endurance and good fortune, frequently appearing together in porcelain decoration. During the Kangxi period, blue and white porcelain was particularly admired for its expressive cobalt painting, intricate borders and naturalistic landscape subjects. Octagonal deep plates with diaper-pattern borders reflect the decorative sophistication of Qing Dynasty porcelain and remain appealing to collectors of early Chinese ceramics.
