DESCRIPTION

A Chinese Nyonya Peranakan Straits porcelain bowl dating to the 19th century, decorated in a vibrant famille rose palette with gilt accents. The exterior features a prominent phoenix among flowering branches, while the interior is centered by a delicate floral spray. A broad pink-ground border encircles the scalloped rim and is densely painted with lotus blossoms, ribbons and auspicious emblems. The combination of turquoise, pink, green, blue and iron red enamels gives the bowl the richly colored appearance associated with Straits Chinese porcelain. The recessed base bears an iron red four-character mark.

COLLECTOR’S NOTE

Nyonya or Peranakan porcelain was produced in China for Straits Chinese communities in Southeast Asia, particularly during the 19th and early 20th centuries. Its characteristic bright famille rose colors, phoenixes, peonies and auspicious motifs reflected Peranakan tastes and were especially favored for ceremonial and domestic wares.
