DESCRIPTION
An 18th century English porcelain bowl attributed to Philip Christian of Liverpool, decorated in underglaze cobalt blue with the Bird on Branch pattern. The exterior features a stylized bird perched among flowering branches and foliage, arranged as freely painted blue and white motifs around the rounded body. A simple repeating blue border decorates the interior beneath the rim. The bowl stands on a short circular foot and displays the hand-painted character and minor firing irregularities associated with early Liverpool porcelain.
COLLECTOR’S NOTE
Philip Christian was an important Liverpool porcelain manufacturer during the 18th century. Blue and white wares attributed to his factory include Chinese-inspired bird, floral and landscape patterns, reflecting the strong contemporary demand for porcelain influenced by imported Chinese ceramics.
