DESCRIPTION
Chinese porcelain cup dating to the Qing Dynasty, Kangxi period, formed with a distinctive lobed and faceted body. The exterior is hand painted in underglaze cobalt blue with repeating panels of stylized flowers and scrolling foliage divided by vertical lines. The interior features a simple flowering plant within a circular border, with a blue decorative band around the rim. The strong cobalt decoration and angular lobed form give this small cup an attractive architectural character typical of early Qing blue and white porcelain.
COLLECTOR’S NOTE
Small blue and white cups of this type demonstrate the variety of molded forms and panel decoration employed by Chinese porcelain workshops during the Kangxi period. The combination of faceted shaping, floral scrollwork and freely painted cobalt decoration makes such pieces appealing examples of early Qing ceramic production.
