DESCRIPTION

An attractive 18th century Chinese export porcelain tea bowl dating to the Qianlong period of the Qing Dynasty, decorated in the traditional Mandarin famille rose palette. The exterior features lively figural scenes depicting Chinese figures in colourful robes within garden and architectural settings, including a woman holding an object and figures beside a pavilion and garden fence. The decoration is executed in vibrant shades of pink, blue, turquoise, orange and purple, with delicate black and grey outlines. Elaborate floral scrollwork, stylised blossoms and ornamental panels separate the figural scenes, creating a richly decorated composition. The interior has a plain white glazed centre with a decorative iron-red and grey patterned border beneath the rim. The bowl has gently flared sides and a neatly formed circular foot.

COLLECTOR’S NOTE

Mandarin famille rose porcelain became particularly fashionable during the Qianlong period, when Chinese workshops produced finely enamelled wares for the European export market. Figural scenes depicting everyday life, garden settings and domestic activities were popular decorative subjects during the 18th century. This tea bowl is a charming example of Qing Dynasty export porcelain, valued for its colourful enamel painting and traditional Mandarin decoration.
