DESCRIPTION

A delicate Chinese porcelain cup decorated in famille rose enamels with flowering peonies, melon fruit and scrolling foliage. Fine gilt highlights accent the decoration, while a turquoise and gilt border encircles the interior rim.

The elegant thinly potted form and refined palette are characteristic of Qing dynasty export and domestic wares of the Qianlong period. The interior is simply decorated with a small floral sprig at the center.

The composition combines auspicious floral and fruit motifs associated with abundance, prosperity and longevity in Chinese decorative arts.

COLLECTOR’S NOTE

Famille rose porcelains reached their artistic peak during the Qianlong period (1736-1795), when enamel colors became increasingly sophisticated and finely shaded. Floral subjects remained among the most popular decorative themes.

Peonies symbolize wealth, honor and beauty, while melons and trailing vines are associated with fertility, abundance and generations of descendants, making these motifs especially desirable on Qing dynasty porcelain.
