CONDITION

FAIR/RESTORED (2/5) – Saucer has an old staple repair with visible cracks and restoration. Cup has a V-shaped crack glued extending from the rim to the foot. Wear to the gilt decoration and minor age-related surface wear. Please review the photos carefully for more details.

DESCRIPTION

An attractive Chinese Export porcelain tea bowl and saucer dating to the Qianlong period, made for the American market. Both pieces feature finely painted sepia waterfront or shipyard scenes enclosed within rich cobalt blue and gilt borders. The scalloped rims and restrained palette are characteristic of late 18th century export wares. A decorative and historically interesting matching set despite its restoration and damage.

COLLECTOR’S NOTE

Chinese Export porcelain decorated with American market scenes is highly sought after by collectors of early trade ceramics. Sepia landscape services from the Qianlong period reflect the growing commercial relationship between China and the young United States during the late 18th century.
