CONDITION

FAIR/RESTORED (2/5) – Significant age-related damage including a long hairline crack extending from the rim, rim chips and losses, and old repair or restoration visible around damaged rim areas. There is additional surface wear and loss to the enamel and gilt decoration. Please review the photos carefully for more details.

DESCRIPTION

An 18th century Chinese export porcelain cup bowl dating to the Qing Dynasty, Qianlong period. The delicately potted body has a scalloped rim decorated with an iron red and purple border with traces of gilt detail. Scattered famille rose flower sprays in pink, purple, green and orange decorate the exterior, with further floral ornament within the bowl. The restrained composition and delicate enameling are characteristic of Chinese export porcelain produced for European markets during the 18th century. Despite its condition, the piece retains considerable period character and decorative appeal.

COLLECTOR’S NOTE

Famille rose export porcelains were produced in substantial quantities during the Qianlong period for European consumers, combining Chinese porcelain craftsmanship with decorative schemes suited to Western taste. Small cups and bowls with scattered floral sprays and shaped borders are representative of the refined tablewares exported during the 18th century.
