DESCRIPTION
An attractive large Chinese porcelain charger decorated in the Famille Rose palette, attributed to the Tongzhi period of the Qing Dynasty, 19th century. The interior features a striking cobalt-blue ground filled with turquoise scrolling lotus foliage and finely painted white floral motifs. Four reserved panels display colourful Hundred Antiques compositions, including decorative vases, precious objects, scholarly ornaments and flowering plants, with a central circular medallion containing vivid orange blossoms and turquoise foliage. The broad border is finished with repeating stylised scrollwork in turquoise, blue and yellow, framed by fine iron-red and gilt lines. The reverse is glazed in a pale tone and decorated with freely painted iron-red bamboo sprays surrounding an unmarked circular foot. The charger has a broad, shallow form and a richly detailed decorative scheme characteristic of later Qing Dynasty porcelain.
COLLECTOR’S NOTE
Hundred Antiques decoration became a popular subject in Chinese porcelain, combining scholarly objects, precious vessels and auspicious symbols associated with refinement, prosperity and good fortune. During the Tongzhi period, richly coloured Famille Rose enamels and dense ornamental grounds were frequently employed on decorative wares. The combination of a brilliant blue ground, turquoise lotus scrolls and colourful reserved panels gives this charger considerable visual appeal. Its generous size and traditional ornament make it an attractive addition to a collection of 19th-century Chinese porcelain.
NOTES
A tiny chip is present on the underside foot rim, together with minor age-related surface wear and glaze imperfections. The Tongzhi period attribution is based on decorative style and has not been independently authenticated. Please review all photos carefully as they form part of the description.
