DESCRIPTION
A Chinese carved jade or hardstone plaque based on the traditional bi disc form, worked in pale celadon and cream tones with areas of russet coloration. Both faces are extensively decorated with repeating incised spiral motifs surrounding a pierced central section carved with a radiating whorl design. The circular body is complemented by an elaborate openwork extension of scrolling forms along one side. The carving combines archaistic geometric ornament with pierced decorative work, while the natural variations and russet areas of the stone contribute additional visual character. A decorative Chinese hardstone carving inspired by traditional jade forms and motifs.
COLLECTOR’S NOTE
The bi disc is an ancient Chinese jade form with a long history extending back to Neolithic cultures and continuing through later periods in both ceremonial and decorative contexts. Archaistic jade and hardstone carvings frequently revived early motifs such as spirals, whorls and openwork scrolls, making them enduring subjects for Chinese collectors.
