DESCRIPTION
A modern Chinese stoneware tea bowl inspired by the celebrated Jian ware of the Southern Song period. The deep rounded body is covered with a lustrous black Tenmoku glaze displaying fine radiating hare fur streaks and scattered brown speckling. The glaze contrasts strongly with the exposed warm brown stoneware around the raised foot and lower underside. Firing variations, small pits and irregularities contribute to the individual character of the surface. A decorative modern interpretation of a classic Chinese tea bowl form.
COLLECTOR’S NOTE
Hare fur Jian bowls are closely associated with the tea culture of the Song dynasty and are admired for their iron-rich dark glazes and distinctive streaked effects produced during firing. Modern examples continue this historic ceramic tradition while offering individual variations in glaze color, texture and firing character.
