CONDITION

VERY GOOD (5/5) – Light age-related wear, minor kiln imperfections and slight rubbing to the gilt rim. No obvious chips, cracks or repairs observed in the photographs. Please review the photos carefully for more details.

DESCRIPTION

A finely painted Chinese porcelain bowl decorated in grisaille enamels with highlights of gilding. The exterior features figures from the celebrated Eight Daoist Immortals gathered within a sparse landscape setting.

The bowl has an elegant slightly lobed rim with a delicate gilt edge and stands on a neatly formed foot ring. The restrained palette and detailed line work create a refined scholarly appearance.

A red Daoguang-style seal mark is painted to the underside. The piece displays well and represents a classic Daoist subject in Chinese decorative arts.

Eight Daoist Immortals (Ba Xian, 八仙) are among the most enduring subjects in Chinese art and popular culture. Representing different ages, genders and social classes, they symbolize longevity, enlightenment, good fortune and transcendence.

Each immortal is associated with distinctive attributes including a sword, fan, flute, lotus, flower basket, fish drum, iron crutch and court tablet. These symbols frequently appear in Chinese porcelain decoration and are collectively known as the Eight Immortals.
