DESCRIPTION

A modern Chinese blue and white porcelain stem cup inspired by forms and decoration associated with the Yuan period. The gently lobed bowl is painted in underglaze cobalt blue with scrolling peony blossoms and leafy foliage, complemented by decorative scroll borders. The interior features a central floral motif surrounded by a scrolling border beneath the rim. The bowl is raised on a hollow flared stem decorated with further blue scrollwork. The softly bluish white glaze and freely painted cobalt decoration give the piece an attractive traditional character.

COLLECTOR’S NOTE

Stem cups were produced in China from early periods and became notable among Yuan dynasty ceramic forms. Blue and white porcelain flourished during the Yuan period, with peonies, scrolling foliage and related floral patterns becoming important elements of the decorative vocabulary later continued throughout Chinese porcelain production.
