📜 Description
A ‘BLEU DE HUÉ’ PORCELAIN ‘DRAGON’ VASE, NOI PHU MARK

China for the Annamese court, late 19th Century. Well-potted, the baluster body gently tapering towards the foot, with high-angled shoulders, rising to a long cylindrical neck and slightly flared rim. The exterior is finely painted in varying shades of underglaze cobalt-blue to depict a powerful coiling Dragon chasing the flaming pearl, its scaly body minutely rendered with dotted patterning and sharp dorsal spines, shown in flight among stylised swirling clouds. The composition is framed above and below by double line borders. The recessed base bears a two-character Noi Phu mark in underglaze blue.

Visible areas of restoration and overpaint are present to the neck and upper body, as shown in the photographs, with associated discoloration from previous repair.

The marks on Bleu de Hué are frequently puzzling. While they may appear legible in Chinese, their meanings often derive from adaptations of Chinese script by the scholar Nguyen Thuyen in the thirteenth century.
