DESCRIPTION

An antique cast iron lever operated embossing or seal press with a substantial shaped frame and long curved handle. The press retains an old black japanned finish with remnants of gilt decoration, giving it an appealing period office and industrial character. The mechanism incorporates opposing metal dies intended to create an impressed or embossed mark in paper or documents. A worn green felt covering remains on the underside of the rectangular base. Compact and solidly constructed, this is an attractive example of early office equipment suitable for a collection or period display.

COLLECTOR’S NOTE

Mechanical seal and embossing presses were widely used by businesses, institutions and professionals to authenticate documents and stationery. Surviving cast iron examples are collected as decorative office antiques and for their connection with historic commercial and administrative practices.
