DESCRIPTION
A striking Chinese papercut style panorama depicting the historic Shanghai Bund waterfront and its celebrated architectural skyline. The composition is rendered as an intricate black silhouette, with numerous windows, towers, flags and architectural details carefully defined against the pale background. At the lower left is the Chinese inscription “Shanghai Waitan”, which translates into English as “Shanghai Bund” or “The Bund, Shanghai.” At the lower right the work is signed in English “ZHAO ZI PING” and “SHANGHAI. CHINA.” The accompanying Chinese name reads “Zhao Zi Ping”, identifying the artist, and a traditional red seal appears beside the signature. The reverse retains a label for Yan Sang Glass and Frames Co., 119-121 Queen’s Road East, Wan Chai, Hong Kong. Presented in a simple black frame, this is an attractive architectural souvenir and decorative record of one of Shanghai’s most recognizable historic cityscapes.
COLLECTOR’S NOTE
The Bund, known in Chinese as Waitan, is Shanghai’s famous waterfront district along the Huangpu River and is particularly celebrated for its concentration of historic early 20th century architecture. Chinese papercutting is a long-established decorative art characterized by precisely cut silhouettes and strong contrasts. This Shanghai skyline combines that traditional visual language with a modern urban subject, making it of interest to collectors of Chinese decorative art, Shanghai memorabilia and architectural views.
