DESCRIPTION
A finely potted Sawankhalok stoneware bowl raised on a tall cylindrical foot and finished with a gently flared rim. The exterior is decorated with a continuous band of scrolling floral foliage above a row of stylized lappet panels, all executed in underglaze iron beneath a pale cream glaze. The interior is simply finished with concentric bands and a small central motif. The unglazed foot is characteristic of Sawankhalok kiln production.
COLLECTOR’S NOTE
Sawankhalok ceramics were produced in north-central Thailand between the 14th and 16th centuries and were widely traded throughout Southeast Asia. Bowls of this form are admired for their balanced proportions, restrained decoration, and distinctive underglaze painted designs.
