DESCRIPTION
An 18th century English porcelain bowl attributed to John Pennington of Liverpool, decorated in underglaze cobalt blue on a creamy white ground. The exterior carries a continuous landscape incorporating a fisherman and figures among buildings, trees, rocks and vegetation. A decorative blue border runs around the interior rim, while the main interior remains largely undecorated. The bowl stands on a neatly formed circular foot and displays the characteristic irregularities and glaze texture associated with early English porcelain production.
COLLECTOR’S NOTE
Liverpool was an important center of English porcelain manufacture during the 18th century, with the Pennington factory among the potteries associated with blue and white wares. This example also retains an S. H. Williams Collection label numbered P.80, providing useful evidence of earlier collection provenance.
