DESCRIPTION
A decorative Japanese Satsuma style earthenware vase dating to the Meiji period of the 19th century. The rounded body is richly painted with figural scenes depicting samurai and boys in traditional costume, executed in warm red, blue, brown and cream enamels with gilt highlights. The surface is further embellished with elaborate raised applied ornament, including prominent ring handles and scrolling architectural forms around the body. Geometric and textile-inspired patterns decorate the shoulder, while the characteristic finely crazed glaze contributes to its antique appearance. An unusually sculptural and highly decorative example with strong visual presence.
COLLECTOR’S NOTE
Meiji period Japanese ceramics were produced in a remarkable variety of decorative forms for both domestic and international markets. Satsuma style wares are particularly collected for their detailed figural painting, richly patterned surfaces and extensive use of gilding, while elaborate applied decoration such as that seen on this vase adds further sculptural interest.
