DESCRIPTION

An attractive Japanese Arita porcelain teapot and cover dating to the Edo period, decorated in an Imari palette of underglaze cobalt blue, iron red and gilt. The rounded body is painted with scrolling foliage, stylized flowers, fans and ornamental motifs arranged freely across the pale glazed ground. Further decoration continues onto the curved handle, spout and fitted cover, which is finished with a rounded knop. The combination of blue, red and gold creates the rich decorative character associated with Japanese export porcelain of the period.

COLLECTOR’S NOTE

Arita kilns produced substantial quantities of decorated porcelain during the Edo period for both domestic use and overseas markets. Imari wares became particularly admired for their characteristic combination of underglaze blue with iron red enamels and gilded highlights, making surviving 18th century teaware appealing to collectors of early Japanese ceramics.
