DESCRIPTION

A small Japanese porcelain cup decorated in underglaze blue with alternating landscape and floral cartouches framed by intricate geometric patterns. The exterior includes stylized mountain scenery, trees, buildings and flowers, while the interior is left largely undecorated with a pale glazed surface. Fine gilt bands accent the upper and lower edges. The base carries a blue painted Eiraku mark, adding further interest to this attractive Meiji period piece.

COLLECTOR’S NOTE

Blue and white porcelain remained popular in Japan during the Meiji period, combining established decorative traditions with finely detailed production for domestic and export markets. The compact form, varied cartouche decoration and marked base make this an appealing example for collectors of Japanese ceramics.
