DESCRIPTION

A Japanese blue and white porcelain cover dating to the 19th century, decorated in underglaze cobalt with immortals within a traditional landscape of architecture, trees and stylized floral scrollwork. The reverse carries a repeating geometric border, while the recessed central fitting bears an Eiraku mark in underglaze blue. The freely painted decoration and varied cobalt tones give the piece an attractive period character.

COLLECTOR’S NOTE

Eiraku marked ceramics are associated with a distinguished Japanese potting tradition centered in Kyoto. This compact blue and white cover combines a traditional figural subject with decorative motifs characteristic of Japanese porcelain produced during the late Edo and Meiji periods.
