DESCRIPTION
An attractive Japanese Arita-style porcelain bowl decorated in traditional underglaze cobalt blue on a white glazed ground. The exterior features two seated boys facing one another, their hands meeting in a charming scene, accompanied by delicate bamboo foliage. The figures are painted with expressive outlines and soft blue shading, creating a pleasing contrast against the white porcelain. The bowl has a gently flared rim, rounded sides and a neatly finished circular foot. A four-character Japanese mark appears beneath the base, adding further interest to this decorative piece.
COLLECTOR’S NOTE
Arita porcelain has a long tradition dating to the early 17th century and is particularly admired for its refined blue and white decoration. Figural subjects featuring children are associated with happiness, innocence and good fortune in East Asian decorative arts. This bowl reflects the continuing popularity of traditional Japanese porcelain designs during the 20th century and would make an appealing addition to a collection of Japanese ceramics.
