DESCRIPTION
A Japanese blue and white porcelain baluster vase dating to the Meiji period. The compact body rises to a short neck and flared rim and is decorated in underglaze cobalt blue with freely painted flowers, foliage and decorative bands. The blue decoration varies naturally in tone beneath a pale translucent glaze, giving the piece an expressive hand-painted character. Concentric blue lines encircle the lower body, while further floral motifs decorate the neck. The restored and overglazed rim remains clearly visible and forms an important part of the condition.
COLLECTOR’S NOTE
Blue and white porcelain remained an important part of Japanese ceramic production during the Meiji period, continuing established decorative traditions while serving both domestic and export markets. Small baluster vases such as this demonstrate the enduring use of freely painted cobalt floral decoration during the 19th century.
