DESCRIPTION
A Japanese Arita porcelain saucer dating to the Meiji period in the 19th century. The interior is densely decorated in underglaze cobalt blue with a central circular floral medallion surrounded by geometric divisions, stylized flowers, scrolling forms and repeated patterned grounds. The restrained blue and white palette gives the piece a crisp graphic character, while the underside is sparsely decorated with small blue painted sprigs around the foot. A pleasing example of later Japanese Arita blue and white porcelain with strong decorative appeal.
COLLECTOR’S NOTE
Arita in Kyushu has been an important center of Japanese porcelain production since the 17th century. During the Meiji period, established blue and white traditions continued alongside new designs made for domestic and international markets. Small dishes and saucers of this type remain popular with collectors for their detailed cobalt decoration and practical display size.
