DESCRIPTION
A French Paris porcelain cup of cylindrical form with an elegant scrolling loop handle. The white porcelain body is decorated with a gilt scalloped pattern around the upper rim, a gilt line around the base and further gilded detail to the handle. The restrained decoration gives the cup a refined period character typical of French ornamental porcelain. An underglaze blue painted mark is present on the base. Despite the visible damage, the cup remains an attractive decorative and study example.
COLLECTOR’S NOTE
French Paris porcelain from the late 18th and early 19th centuries was produced by numerous workshops and frequently employed delicate gilding on finely potted white porcelain. The blue mark resembles marks associated with Sevres traditions, but attribution to the Sevres manufactory should be treated with caution unless independently authenticated.
