DESCRIPTION
An 18th century English porcelain teapot attributed to Worcester and decorated in underglaze cobalt blue with the Cormorant pattern. The rounded body carries a detailed Chinese-inspired waterside landscape with figures, a boat, buildings, birds, trees and rockwork, complemented by decorative blue borders. The teapot has a loop handle, curved spout and domed cover surmounted by an applied flower bud finial with moulded leaf decoration. The rich hand-painted blue and white decoration gives the piece the distinctive character associated with Georgian Worcester porcelain.
COLLECTOR’S NOTE
The Cormorant pattern, also known in collecting literature as Fisherman and Cormorant, is associated with Worcester blue and white porcelain of the 18th century. Its combination of figures, waterside scenery, boats and birds reflects the strong influence of Chinese porcelain designs on early English manufacturers.
