DESCRIPTION

An attractive antique English Spode Stone China platter dating to approximately 1820, during the Georgian Regency period. This rectangular serving dish features the celebrated Chinoiserie Landscape pattern, identified as Spode Pattern 2857, with a finely detailed Chinese-inspired scene depicting pagodas, pavilions, flowering trees, rocky landscapes and stylised foliage. The decoration combines rich cobalt blue with delicate Famille Rose colours of pink, turquoise, green, orange and yellow. An elaborate blue spiral border with floral reserves surrounds the central landscape, while the shaped rim is embellished with scrolling ornament and gilt highlights. The platter is made from Spode’s durable Stone China body, developed to imitate the appearance of Chinese export porcelain. The underside bears the blue printed SPODE Stone China mark. A decorative and collectible example of early 19th-century Staffordshire pottery.

COLLECTOR’S NOTE

Josiah Spode II developed the firm’s production of fine ceramics during the Regency period, when Chinese-inspired patterns were particularly fashionable in Britain. Spode’s Stone China was introduced in the early 19th century as a durable alternative to imported Chinese porcelain. Pattern 2857 is a recognised Chinoiserie landscape design, with comparable examples documented in the Bonhams sale of the Copeland China Collection at Trelissick House in 2013, where a group of Spode Stone China dishes dating to circa 1810-1825 included this pattern. The combination of intricate printed outlines, colourful enamel decoration and the original Spode mark makes this platter an appealing example of early English ironstone production.
